Rob Dickinson’s mariachi page

Hello, this is Rob! Thank you for coming to my mariachi site! Many thanks to the I Can’t Believe It’s Not Futter team for designing this for me. I hope all their other pages are as wonderful as this one.

Mariachi is perhaps the most undeservedly overlooked musical form in the world. I venture to say that over 50% of the world’s most skilled guitarists operate in this genre. I am one of them.

This is a photo of me and my band, Los Basquetboles Son Anaranjados. My bandmates have never told me what our name means, but the words are absolutely gorgeous.

The music itself is beautiful and intricate, hearkening back to early Spanish traditions. Have you ever heard twelve men playing acoustic guitars together? Didn’t think so! Have you ever heard an accordion weep? Didn’t think so! There is so much you are missing out on if you don’t follow mariachi.

We have recorded six records, all of which utilize a full band, including four guitarrones, one of which I play. Do you know what a guitarron is? Take a guess. Give up? Okay, I’ll tell you. It’s a large guitar! Now you have some trivia to share with your friends.

In Mexico, where most of our records are sold, we use a slightly altered publicity photo. Here it is.

According to our manager, Merck Mercuriadis, this picture is superior in a public relations sense. Apparently, it also leads to better sales. I wonder how the audience feels when they see us in person for the first time! I am certainly closer in appearance to the Rob in the first photo. Oh, well. They certainly forget their surprise when they become enraptured in the music.

We will be touring next year, so be on the lookout at a Roy’s Western Smorgy near you. Cheers!

Rob
